Colin Bean 1927–2009

Dad's Army Actor Colin Bean who played Private Sponge, has died aged 82 at Wigan Infirmary.

He had spent his last years at Wickham Hall Care Home in Springfield and died at the infirmary on Saturday 20 June 2009.

Originally a repertory actor , Colin was plucked from a stage career by Jimmy Perry who had worked with him in 1962. Colin went on to portray Private Sponge in many Dad's Army episodes and was a regular supporter of Dad's Army Appreciation Society events.
