Private Frazer is given control of the platoon when Captain Mainwaring tires of his constant grumbling and decides that the only way to deal with him is to give him a taste of responsibility.
Unknown to Mainwaring, Scottish Major-General Menzies pays a visit and mistaking Frazer (himself a fellow Scot) for Mainwaring invites him to pipe in the haggis at a forthcoming meal.Regaining control of the platoon, Captain Mainwaring could find himself in an awkward position, when the dinner arrives!

Jimmy Perry had developed the character of Frazer close to John's own personality. At the beginning of the television series, John had dismissed Dad's Army to Jimmy as ridiculous idea When the series was a success, John was able to congratulate Jimmy with "I never doubted it would succeed for a second". Echoes of the retort are heard in this episode when Frazer is forced to commend his Captain with "I never doubted you for a second…". |
